MMOG - massively multiplayer online game - is a video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, MMOG are played on the Internet, and feature at least one persistent world. They are not necessarily games played on personal computers. Most of the newer game consoles, including the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and Wii can access the Internet and may therefore run MMOG games.

MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many video game genres.

Gaming is now the fastest growing media sector worldwide (CAGR 17 per cent `08 -`13) - faster than Internet, Film, DVD, TV, Print, etc.

Fast Facts:

  • 50 per cent of children and teenagers in the US is estimated to be using Virtual Worlds Online Games by 2011

  • Worldwide MMOG market estimated to yield USD13bn by 2013

  • World-of-Warcraft is to-date most successful player with 11m subscribers and USD 1bn of annual revenue and valuation of USD 9bn
