Kuwait: Ministry suspends some ISP licenses |

KUWAIT: The Ministry of CommunicationsMinistry of Communications
is to suspend the licenses of a number of internet service providers (ISPs) who provide advanced internet services and the wireless WiMAX service.Abdulmohsen Al-Mzaidi, the Deputy Minister of Communications, issued the decision based on a recommendation from Sarrah Al-Salaili, the head of the ministryministry
's Frequencies and Wireless Licenses Department, who called for the licenses of those ISPs working on the frequencies between 2,500 and 2,690 GHz to be suspended.Al-Salaili revealed that the ministryministry
is currently preparing to submit tenders for advanced wireless internet and WiMAX services in the country, adding that such procedures should be carried out in a coordinated and methodical way. He said that the tenders would give a fair chance of competition between all companies wishing to provide these services and all would be treated equally and in a transparent manner, reported Al-Qabas.The department head offered a number of reasons for suspending the licenses of some ISPs, including a lack of commitment to obtaining the proper licenses from these firms, along with their failure to implement their services within the designated time period.
Another reason behind suspending their licenses was the companies' failure to pay the state a share of the income derived from payments for these services, said Al-Salaili, adding that suspending these firms' licenses offered all the companies submitting tenders a more level playing field and fairer competition. He also said that this decision would allow further research to be conducted on the frequency range in question, adding that more studies need to be carried out in order to keep up with the latest
developments in this field.
