Two Schools Off Education Authority's 'Watchlist'
- Text size
DUBAI - Two private schools in Dubai, which have been recognised by the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau for turning around their education standards, said the recommendations for improvement have enhanced their teaching and learning environment.
Last week, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority announced that two schools - Oxford School and Star International School, Al Twar - would not require further inspections, since they had made satisfactory progress.
The schools had been termed 'unsatisfactory' during initial inspections between October 2008 and April 2009 and will have a chance to change their grade in the next cycle of inspection.
Nikhat Rehman, pricipal of Oxford School, said the period of inspections was a good learning experience. "There was a requirement to change as we were following the traditional approach to teaching and realised we had to rework our assessment policies. The inspections provided a new perspective to the way education can be imparted," she said.
After the initial inspection the school decided to introduce projectors in classrooms, stocked their library with additional resources and has become a member of the Cambridge International Primary Programme. "This programme helps teachers use various resources and improves the students Mathematics and Science skills," she added.
The Star International School, Al Twar also received a glowing feedback from the inspectors and journalists were invited to witness the progress the school had accomplished in a short period.
Principal Dolly A. Goriawala said the school had been planning a change in methodology and "the inspections provided an impetus to our initiatives." The school drew up a comprehensive action plan which was shared with the parents and school management. Standards of Arabic, that according to the KHDA report is an issue in most of the private schools, has been tackled through quiz, competitions, etc.
