Dutco Balfour BeattyDutco Balfour BeattyLoading... has successfully set up a new waste recycling centre in its interiors and joinery division in collaboration with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), according to a recent Build Safe UAE alert.

"This is in addition to the successfully running unit set up in our plant division," according to the company alert. "All waste generated by the division is dispatched to the recycling centre where it is segregated into colour-coded containers. Once the bins are full, we contact EEG and they arrange for approved waste handling authorities to collect it. This scheme has resulted in improved housekeeping and helped increase the level of environmental awareness among our employees."

Emirates Technical and Thermal Systems said it is a registered participant of the Safety in the Heat Programme launched by Health Authority Abu Dhabi (Haad)Health Authority Abu Dhabi (Haad)Loading... and distributes the materials from the latter to all its sites.

"The awareness posters are also translated into other languages so that the message can be clearly shared and communicated to our workers of different nationalities," said the company alert.

Meanwhile, a subcontractor was engaged to undertake radiography for the NDT of welds to a pipeline. Having completed the work the camera was due to be collected by a licensed vehicle. The vehicle was delayed and the NDT crew, contrary to their company procedures, left the camera that contained a radioactive source unattended close to the site boundary. It was observed by a staff member and isolated until the company arranged collection.

BSU recommended that under no circumstances should site staff be given permission to leave any radioactive source on site.

In another incident, a Bobcat caused injury to a worker on site. The injured person was carrying out compaction work by using a whacker plate while a Bobcat was carrying out levelling work in the same area. It was reversing and the worker was struck from behind. His foot went under the track and his leg was slightly crushed.

Apparently, he did not hear the vehicle reverse because of the noise of the whacker plate. Besides, the reversing alarm was not working, there was no banksman in place and the worker was not wearing a high visibility vest.

As remedial actions, the vehicle was fitted with alarm and all plant operators attended a toolbox talk.
