DOHA: Vodafone QatarVodafone QatarLoading... yesterday asserted it had the necessary approval from the authorities to set up cell sites.

Matthew Harrison-Harvey, director of VodafoneVodafoneLoading...'s Regulatory and External Relations, said Vodafone QatarVodafone QatarLoading... had followed the required procedures for installing permanent cell sites.

"We have obtained approvals from the Urban Planning and Development Authority and relevant municipalities to install temporary cell sites," Harrison-Harvey said.

He was replying to queries from The Peninsula following a report in the Arabic daily Al Sharq that VodafoneVodafoneLoading... had been sued for installing cell sites without a licence.

"Where court cases have been filed, VodafoneVodafoneLoading... is participating in those procedures," he said.

Al Sharq reported Vodafone QatarVodafone QatarLoading... was sued for installing repeater stations and communication equipment without proper permits. The report further stated attempts to resolve the issue amicably had failed, which then forced inspectors to refer the matter to the courts.

"VodafoneVodafoneLoading... has constructed many of the world's premium mobile networks and the one we're building here in Qatar will be one of the best... To make sure we bring you competitive services we're using some temporary sites, which we will replace with permanent sites in the near future," said Harrison-Harvey.

Harrison-Harvey said there were public health concerns about exposure to the energy carried by radio frequency signals, because of which the company and personnel from the World Health Organisation monitor all the sites to ensure they are safe.

William Fagan, executive director of ictQatarictQatarLoading..., said the regulatory authority had issued a general licence to Vodafone QatarVodafone QatarLoading... to allow it to operate as a telecommunications company here, but as to the location of the cell sites, the company had to talk with the authorities in the municipality where the cell sites were being put up.
