AMMAN - A consortium of Jordanian and international organisations plan to build a multimillion Photovoltaic power plant in Maan by 2012, with a capacity of 100 megawatt of electricity, according to a leading member in the consortium.

"This will be the world's largest power plant ever," Kawar Energy Chief Executive Officer Hanna Zaghloul told The Jordan Times Tuesday.

"It will generate hundreds of jobs," he indicated, noting that in its first phase, the plant will need 400-500 workers for various duties with another 100 job opportunities in the second phase.

Naming it "Shams Maan" and describing it as a "giant project", Zaghloul said Jordan undertakes a step towards long-term energy independence and a green environment by adopting this technology.

Mohammad Turk, the director of Maan Development Company (MDC), expressed confidence that the project will attract further investments into Maan Development Zone.

In addition to Kawar Energy, Solar Ventures and 1st International for Investment joined the consortium, which will sign an agreement with MDC to implement the project, Zaghloul pointed.

"This project strengthens MDC's mandate to create a solar hub in Jordan for training, research and development," he said, adding that besides attracting solar technology companies and investors, the scheme will have a profound social and economical impact on Maan.

Zaghloul elaborated that "Shams Maan" will not only be contributing to Jordan's renewable energy planned target, but equally important, it will prevent the equivalence of 160,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Jordan imports 96 per cent of its energy and is considered one of the world's 10 poorest counties in water resources.

As the southern part of the Kingdom is extremely sunny, we have excellent radiation indices, making it one of the world's ideal places for solar energy production, he stressed, noting that the new project will not need water to generate power from steam turbines.

"In order to reach a final agreement with the consortium, we have signed a memorandum of understanding, under which, we will verify their financial capabilities to implement such a project and reach an agreement over the rate of the electricity generated from this plant," he concluded.
