Reflective markings top of the UAE's road safety agenda
· Road Accidents 4th overall cause of death worldwide
In an effort to reduce accidents on UAE roads, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the International Road Federation (IRF) supported by 3M3M
, recently held two seminars in the UAE with the objective of helping authorities reduce accidents involving heavy vehicles. Each year 26 000 people die and 250 000 are injured in the Middle East due to road accidents, which has an annual socio-economic impact of $60 billion. According to the World Health Organisation, road accidents are on an increasing trend and they are likely to become the 4th overall cause of death worldwide, after heart disease and cancer.
Those addressing invitees from the traffic police in Sharjah and Dubai, along with the RTARTA
, included Edoardo Gianotti, Secretary of the Working Parties on Lighting and Light-Signalling and on Passive Safety of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations of United Nations,, and Rik Nuyttens, Vice Chairman of the IRF, who spoke with regards to solutions to improving road safety.Edoardo Gianotti said, "Road transport is a complex system with implications on road safety and security, energy consumption and the environment. In order to minimize these negative impacts, governments regulated in the past these impacts by national legislation. However, they realized that there was a crucial need to update regulations constantly in order to cover new technologies and to internationally harmonize requirements to facilitate border crossing and trade of vehicles.
The World Forum for the Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) of UNECE is the unique forum at the global level that is leading the regulatory activity to harmonize safety and environmental performance requirements of vehicles reducing road casualties and transport-related air pollution.
"The 'global village' in which we now live means that road safety is more of an issue than ever before. Through the programme in the UAE, we are suggesting UNECE legal instruments to the region in order to further harmonize vehicle regulations worldwide."
The sessions, which were carried out over two days, included information with regards to local statistics on road accidents involving trucks, implementation of ECE Regulations by contracting parties, along with case studies and examples of best practices.
