Telecom firms for Quadplay
- Text size
Middle East-based telecom operators must look at new revenue streams like providing 'Quadplay' services as income from fixed lines come down. Quadplay is the convergence of voice, data and video that share resources and interact with each other.
David Brennan, General Manager of the Etisalat Academy told Emirates Business, at the "Quadplay and Beyond" conference: "The telecom industry is changing as it is about convergence and Quadplay. With fixed lines being challenged, operators have to provide new innovative services to consumers. Income from mobile subcriptions have gone high therefore all of this has to be linked with broadband and television."
He cited the example of MobilyMobily
, telecom operator based in Saudi Arabia. "MobilyMobily
has one of the highest mobile broadband penetration in the world. Increasing capacity has made it possible to bring together fixed, mobile and other technologies together."MobilyMobily
's HSPA based broadband subscriber base has 422,000 daily mobile broadband users. The users consume 34 terabytes of data, one of the busiest in the world. Later this year, etisalat will introduce HSPA+ service allowing up to 28 megabits per second (MBPS) downlink and 11 Mbps uplink. The main challenge for operators according to Brennan are the service providers from the television sector. "Television provides video-on-demand, high definition TV and interactive content which can be provided by telecom operators as a bundle to customers using quadruple play or Quadplay."
The Academy has been pushing technology convergence and encouraging operators to adopt industry standards.
