Qatargas poised for cut in emission rate

The Peninsula

12 January 2009
DOHA: QatargasQatargasLoading... is poised for a major cut in the CO2 emission rate in Qatar. It has stepped up series of initiatives, including the development of innovative technologies, to minimise the gas flaring and thus to bring in a drastic cut in the country's huge emission rate, a top official of QatargasQatargasLoading... has said. "Our flare minimisation is a continuous effort. Of late, we have launched series of project to minimise the flaring", the official told The Peninsula yesterday.

QatargasQatargasLoading... has already upgraded its flare system to smokeless. With the introduction of the new system, no black smoke is emanating from the plants. "Flare minimisation has been introduced throughout the plant. We are also working on some innovative methods to bring down the flaring to the minimal level", he said.

According to the 2007-2008 Human Development Report, Qatar has the highest per capita CO2 emission in the world. However, the country's total emission rate is very low (46m tones) when compared to other countries in the region. However, Qatar recently joined a World Bank supported Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) programme to bring down its greenhouse gas emissions. Under the GGFR programme, Qatar is expected to reduce its CO2 emission rate to 13,734 tMCO2 by year 2012. Qatar was the first GCC country to join the ambitious GGFR programme.

The World Bank project is a public-private partnership that brings together oil-producing countries, state-owned companies and major international oil companies so that they can overcome the barriers to reducing gas flaring. Gas flaring in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has an estimated 50bcm annually, which makes it the second flaring region in the world after Russia and the Caspian region (about 60bcm). Sub Saharan Africa flares about 35bcm. The amount of gas flared in the Middle East alone with the about 30bcm could feed a 20 million tonne liquefied natural gas plant.
