Energy City Qatar awards QR40m contract to firm

The Peninsula

07 January 2009
DOHA: Energy City QatarEnergy City QatarLoading... yesterday awarded a QR40m contract to Qatar-based AMMICO for the construction of Phase I of its headquarters at the currently being developed Lusail project. The construction of Phase I which involves the piling works for the ECQECQLoading... headquarters will be completed in five months. Work to be undertaken by AMMICO will include drilling support, pumping out ground water and setting foundation support beams.

Energy City QatarEnergy City QatarLoading... CEO, Engineer Hesham Al Emadi, and Ammico Construction CEO Jamal Nasser, signed the agreement. Al Emadi said that several local and international companies had competed for the contract and AMMICO eventually won the bid having submitted the best proposal, meeting the required conditions given that the company is specialized in foundations engineering and drilling projects with extensive experience, gained from more than 30 years in the field of civil engineering.

He said the ECQECQLoading... Headquarters, one of the most important projects laid out in this year's agenda, will be the first building to come up in Lusail. This building is very important since it will house the main IT infrastructure of the entire city along with a highly advanced data center which is part of the technological infrastructure of the city, he said.

The data centre is set to become the world's biggest Internet Protocol supported projects provided through specialised networking operations and primary information technology frameworks that will offer advanced Internet Protocol services to all the inhabitants of the city.

Asked whether the current global economic slowdown had any impact on ECQECQLoading...'s development, Al Emadi said it did not affect the overall execution of the project. However, some smaller developers may face difficulties in raising financing, but this would not affect the project.

"We have talked to major developers who represent 70 percent of the total number of developers and have assured that they were working on their projects and concept designs and ready to start constructions soon," he said. He added that it is normal for any major project such as ECQECQLoading... that some developers delay their activities because of problems with financing or any other circumstances. "We have more than 82 developers and the majority of them are going ahead with their projects," he said.
