Ring Road to Link Internal and External Roads in RAK

Ras Al Khaimah - A ring road that will join all the internal and external road network in the emirate, will be one of features of a project by the Department of Public Works in Ras Al Khaimah, it was announced.

Work on the ongoing project that will cost Dh1 billion, will be completed in about 11 years' time.

The project aims to improve the road network in the emirate and reduce the traffic congestions. The new roads will also reduce the number of road mishaps in the emirate, officials said.

Michel Sagal, Director of the Public Works Department said the project will also include bridges and intersections and the installation of modern equipment.

These projects will be built in three phases with the first phase to be completed in 2010, the second in 2015 and the last in 2020.  

Sagal said, "When completed, heavy trucks will be using the ring road to help reduce traffic." He said the installation of lights covering around 116 kilometres in the rural and urban areas will help motorists.

Captain Mohammed Al Zaabi, Chief of Vehicle Registration and Licensing at the RAK Traffic and Licensing Department said, 21,000 new vehicles, both heavy and light, have been registered this year. 

Two Dead in Road Accidents Two Emaratis died in separate road mishaps in RAK, on Wednesday.

In the first accident, 32-year-old Khalid Mattal Al Mazrui, died on the spot when the vehicle he was travelling in overturned and rolled several times after hitting a road pavement on the Rashed Road in the Al Dhait area.

In another incident, a 15-year-old teenager died immediately while the driver, a 16-year-old, sustained severe injuries when their speeding vehicle crashed into a traffic signpost and the security light poles on a Ras Al Khaimah road.      

Captain Ibrahim Ali, Chief of the Al Munaie Police Post said the teenager who was driving without a licence lost control of the vehicle.
