AMMAN - In order to enhance and encourage responsible economic growth in the Kingdom, the EU and the University of Jordan (UJ)University of Jordan (UJ)
unveiled on Tuesday the country's first master's degree in competition and regulation. In a ceremony, held under the patronage of UJUJ
President Khaled Karaki to inaugurate the degree programme yesterday, experts in the field and academics expressed hope that the programme would help develop regulatory professionals, particularly in light of the current global financial crisis.
Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC)Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC)
Chief Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Hiyasat said the course will play a vital role for regulation in the Kingdom's rapidly privatised economy, noting that the country was the first in the region to regulate its telecommunications sector.
TRCTRC
will send seven of its employees to enrol in the first class, which will begin in the 2009/2010 academic year, he indicated.
Patrick Renauld, European Commission Delegation head, expressed appreciation over growing partnership between the EU and the UJUJ
.
"Jordan has made considerable progress in the degree of market regulation," Renauld said, adding that with ongoing privatisation, more lawyers are needed to interpret the growing number of laws and regulations governing the sector.
Organisers expressed hope that the course will attract professionals from across the region, noting that 10 out of the first 30 students to complete the course will be from neighbouring countries.
The course, which was developed jointly by the College of Europe and the UJUJ
along with input from the Executive Privatisation Commission, Electricity Regulatory Commission, Public Transport Regulatory Commission among others, comes under a 20 million euro programme to assist in the establishment and enhancement of regulatory bodies in the Kingdom.
