UAE-based drug firm's products being pulled off shelves |

Doha - Products of a UAE-based pharmaceutical company, PharmaCare, are being pulled off the shelves in Qatar after the National Health Authority (NHA)National Health Authority (NHA)
cancelled the registration of the company and its products. The registration has been cancelled "due to lung infection bacteria found in the company's premises" in the United Arab Emirates, according to an official statement issued by the NHANHA
yesterday. Early last month, the NHANHA
had asked the local agents of the company to stop imports of all its products. The instruction was given based on reports appearing in UAE newspapers and "on laboratory reports received from neighbouring countries," said the statement.
Distributors of PharmaCare products in Qatar told The Peninsula last evening that they had already asked pharmacies to stop sales of all available products of the company and recalled the stocks.
"We have already conveyed the message to most pharmacies here and the rest will be informed very soon. We have also asked doctors to stop prescribing PharmaCare products to their patients," said an official from the distributing firm. He said PharmaCare was a new entrant in the Qatari market and six of its products were being sold here, which include paracetamol tablets and anti-acidity drugs.
Yesterday evening, The Peninsula found some of these products on sale at a pharmacy in the Airport area. The distributors, however, reiterated that all the remaining stocks would be recalled soon.
All pharmaceutical products as well as the manufacturing companies need to be registered with the NHANHA
before the products go on sale in the country. Once the registration is cancelled, the products are automatically banned.
The distributors said they had stopped importing PharmaCare products after the NHANHA
issued instructions in this regard on November 5. Only old stocks were available in the market, which are now being pulled off the shelves.
"We have come to know that the manufacturing unit of PharmaCare in Dubai remains closed as the UAE government is investigating into the issue," said the official.
