Qatar: Museum opens doors to public |

Doha - The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha's most important cultural landmark, opened its doors to the public yesterday.
The 382,000 square feet, five-storey building has a treasured collection of more than 800 priceless exhibits that represent the full scope of Islamic art. Visitors can now see all the artefacts, many of which are on public display for the first time.
"This is a moment of joy and pride," said Abdullah Al Najjar, CEO of the museum. "Years of hard work is now put to test by receiving the visitors. We welcome them all to the museum, which is a cultural landmark of the country. We hope the younger generation come and enjoy the museum and learn about the rich culture of the region," he told The Peninsula.
"Qatar's long tradition of cultural diversity is a powerful inspiration to all people as we work together to shape the 21st century. MIA will be the starting place of the Qatari cultural experience. Visitors will discover that not only is the museum's exterior magnificent, the collection inside is equally inspirational," he said.
Little did Katia Feo, who had come all the way from Spain to attend the UN conference on Financing for Development in Doha, know that she would be honoured as the first visitor to the museum. "I was keen to see the museum," she said. "I had read in a magazine about the museum and it seemed interesting. I am really honoured to be the first visitor."
The museum offers visitors two floors of permanent collection galleries, a temporary gallery, two outdoor courtyards, a gift shop and an elaborate lobby.
"This is the beginning of the real effect and function of the museum," said Dr Oliver Watson, director of the museum. "We will be having many events and workshops to educate the public on Islamic art and make sure that they return to see the displays over and over again. This is something really great for the people of Qatar.''
