Iran: Renovation of 60 Airports on Track

Iran Daily

29 November 2008
Iran Airports Holding Company (IAHC) Managing Director Ahmad Momenirokh said 60 airport development projects will be completed by March 2009.

According to ISNA, he noted that $93 million has been allocated to the projects in 30 airports.

Momenirokh expressed satisfaction over the country's airport services and said $31 million has been put aside to improve and upgrade these services.

According to him, there are now 54 airports in the country: 8 international, 21 air border, and 25 domestic. In the first half of this year, passenger transport increased by 8 percent compared to the same period last year.

IAHC Deputy Director Ali Golmohammadi also said there are over one hundred incomplete plans and infrastructure projects in the air transportation sector, the completion of which will resolve many problems facing the domestic aviation industry.

Most of the fleet of Iranian airlines today consist of Boeings and used or leased Airbus and Russian manufactured aircraft such as Tupolevs. Iran has initiated manufacturing aircraft on its own such as the IR-AN-140.

The Antonov AN-140 is a short-range turboprop airliner, first flown on September 17, 1997. Apart from the main production line in Kharkiv, Ukraine by KSAMC, aircraft are being produced in Russia and under license by HESA in Iran as the IR.AN-140 or Iran-140. It can carry a maximum of 52 passengers.
