India Energy Needs Highlighted

Iran Daily

Nasrollah Seifi, managing director of National Iranian Gas Exporting Company (NIGEC), attended a three-day seminar in New Delhi.

He told IRNA that Iran can meet India's energy needs, adding that the county, if not now, in future would certainly face energy crisis.

"Apart from the energy, India's need for a city gas pipeline network and technical services is very urgent," he said.

He added that in both areas, Iran can assist India just like it helped the Indian companies in the upstream sectors of Iran's oil industry.

Referring to India's plan to diversify its mode of energy transportation, Seifi said, "India is willing to replace diesel and petroleum with different forms of gas such as CNG since it is environmental friendly.

According to him, New Delhi plans to import gas from Iran through the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline.

It also plans to import gas from Turkmenistan and Myanmar although it agrees that they could never be a proper substitute for the IPI pipeline.

During the three-day seminar which ended on Wednesday, the Indian officials said they plan to invest close to $20 billion in gas development projects.

Meanwhile, Iran has reportedly changed top managers at two state gas firms and the National Petrochemical CompanyNational Petrochemical CompanyLoading..., an Oil Ministry spokesman said. The ministry spokesman did not give a reason for the changes.

Azizollah Ramezani, who has held the post of gas supply director at the National Iranian Oil CompanyNational Iranian Oil CompanyLoading..., will now head the National Iranian Gas CompanyNational Iranian Gas CompanyLoading..., a ministry spokesman said.

Ramezani replaces Reza Kasaizadeh, who moves to head the National Iranian Gas Export Company in place of Nasrollah Seifi. Seifi was involved in the Crescent and India-Pakistan pipeline talks.

Iran has threatened to scrap a deal reached with Crescent Petroleum of the United Arab Emirates in 2001 unless the gas price agreed is raised.

A plan to export gas to Pakistan and India has also sparked a heated debate over prices proposed.
