Persian Gulf Blockade Possible

Iran Daily

20 September 2008
A senior Iranian official said if war is imposed on Iran, the country can impose a complete blockade on the Persian Gulf.

"No vessel can pass through the Persian Gulf without being within the reach of the missiles of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy," Major General Yahya Rahim-Safavi, the top military advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, told the Fars News Agency.

The former IRGC chief earlier this week declared that the responsibility defending the strategic waterway is now the function of the elite Guards.

A US-based think tank recently declared that the IRGC is capable of waging a unique asymmetric war against larger naval vessels.

The report by The Washington Institute for the Near East Policy said in the two decades after the end of the Iran-Iraq war, the IRGC has transformed into a highly motivated, well-equipped, and well-financed force. Almost a million people died in the 198-88 military conflict imposed by deposed Iraqi despot Saddam Hussein and backed strongly by all the major powers.

A bipartisan study group has concluded that the next US president would be wise to make contingency plans for a military attack against Iran, but even a successful strike might not stop Tehran's development of nuclear activities, AP reported.

The forthcoming report by the Bipartisan Policy Center, prepared under the guidance of former Sens. Daniel Coats, a Republican, and Democrat Charles Robb said that the next president could conclude that the risks of a military strike are outweighed by the dangers of a strong Iran dominating the Persian Gulf and Iran possibly acting to eradicate Israel.
