Majlis speaker says amending election law is essential
- Text size
TEHRAN - Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on Sunday called for amending the presidential election law, saying, "This law has many shortcomings".
"The elections law has many strong points too; however, it should be amended," Larijani told reporters.
He said, "Regarding the importance of this issue, I have asked the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee to carry out thorough investigations in this regard."
Majlis plan on questioning president
Larijani refused to comment on the lawmakers' plan to question the president in parliament, saying, "I cannot comment about this issue because the lawmakers should feel free to make decisions."
Economic reform plan
The Majlis speaker said a special committee has been studying the government's economic reform plan and will report on its investigations by next week.
The Ahmadinejad administration has devised an economic reform plan which calls for paying subsides for various products directly to people.
The plan has been prepared to reduce the excessive waste of the country's resources especially energy, and to ensure that low-income families pay fewer taxes.
The government's economic policy has pushed inflation close to 26 percent by injecting large sums of cash into the economy to fund local infrastructure projects.
However many economists have expressed concern that the reform plan will send the high rate of inflation even higher.
Larijani said the economic reform plan is a step forward in resolving the country's economic problems.
But he stressed that the plan should be implemented carefully. "We are not at all interested in wrapping up the issue hurriedly. Although we demand cooperation between the legislature and government in economic projects, we pursue this issue according to our logic."
The Majlis speaker said Iran is hugely suffering high inflation and the parliament will avoid voting for any project that would further drive down the economic situation.
