Land law to be reviewed to boost housing |

The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture is expected to look at amending the law related to land holding to provide plots for housing.
Muharraq Municipal Council Vice Chairman Abdulnasser Al Mahmeed told the Tribune that once the changes were approved, it would help families stay together as more land would be available for housing. The waiting list of beneficiaries of the National Housing Rehabilitation Plan could also be dealt with expeditiously, he said.
Al Mahmeed said many families had land that could hold more than one house. But these families have gone out. Many have applied for new houses and been waiting for allocation.
An amendment is expected to help those who have moved out of their homes to avail funds for new houses or expansion to accommodate larger families.
In addition to fostering closer family ties, it would decrease the demand for land and housing and the government would be able to clear the waiting list, he added.
The Minister, Mansour Bin Rajab, postponed the request to increase the number of rooms and the area of each house for those who had more than one wife. Larger families have stretched the available space beyond limits, he added.
