- Text size
A mandatory health insurance system to provide affordable healthcare for all residents will be the focus of discussion between the Bahrain Insurance Association (BIA) and about 150 decision-makers at a workshop from October 12 to 13 at Movenpick Hotel.
The two-day compulsory medical insurance workshop will be held under the patronage of the Minister of Health, Dr. Faisal bin Yacoub Al Hamer, to finalise a proposal for compulsory health insurance system for the authorities.
"The participants will discuss important healthcare topics and development opportunities in the Kingdom," Director, Life, Medical, BIA, Younis Jamal, said.
Participants include researchers, insurance executives from Bahrain and the other GCC states, representatives from the Ministry of HealthMinistry of Health
, Central Bank of Bahrain, Labour Market Regulatory Authority, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Economic Development Board, private hospitals and insurance companies. The workshop will discuss the experiences of mandatory health insurance implemented in other Gulf countries and submit suggestions to help shape and improve the Kingdom's healthcare sector. "The aim is to provide a proposal to ensure that everyone has the right to affordable healthcare. A comprehensive health insurance policy is necessary for the sustainability of the local population," Jamal said. The government spent about BD20 million in the healthcare sector for expatriates alone - which was just over five per cent of the total expenses in 2007. A mandatory health insurance scheme is expected to reduce government expenditure as it will place the onus on employers to take care of employees' medical expenses.
