MUSCAT -- The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA)Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA)
yesterday announced a shortlist of six international telecom operators and consortiums which will enter the next phase of bidding for an integrated fixed public telecom licence in the Sultanate. They were among 10 expressions of interest received by the TRATRA from established telecom players in response to the recent government announcement formally launching the competition bidding process. At a press briefing on August 11, TRATRA Member Engineer Naashiah bint Saud al Kharusiyah invited interested telecom operators to bid for the integrated fixed public telecommunication licence.The competitive bidding process is in line with the TRATRA
's efforts to support the development and liberalisation of the telecom sector in Oman. Besides contributing to the advancement of the telecom infrastructure, competition in fixed public telecom services will also support the growth of varied services, particularly in the area of broadband Internet, enhance the quality of services and create new jobs opportunities for Omanis. Oman's 2.75 million telecom subscribers have fixed line phone services, while broadband penetration is just 3 %.
