- Text size
MUSCAT -- The German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) announced yesterday that it had reached an agreement with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)
by which PDOPDO
will sponsor five full scholarships for students in applied geosciences. "We are very happy and proud that PDOPDO
, the largest employer of geoscientists in Oman, will sponsor five of our students and we are looking forward to a fruitful cooperation in higher education and research," said Dr Christoph Hilgers, Vice-Rector at GUtech. PDOPDO
will sponsor three full scholarships for new GUtech students and two full scholarships for the best students of the current GUtech Foundation Year. "We consider them to be our future employees. We will support them not only financially, but also by offering them academic and career counseling as well as summer internships," said Shabir Hussain, Learning and Development Manager at PDOPDO
.Currently, PDOPDO
sponsors geosciences-related university studies abroad, mainly in the UK and Australia. "This is the first time ever that PDOPDO
has offered scholarships to geosciences students inside Oman. I think GUtech is a great contribution to the local academic scene. We are supportive of GUtech's vision and plans and wish to contribute to this vision for the benefit of Oman," said Hussain. Three weeks ago, a delegation of PDOPDO
's exploration, training and human resources departments visited the GUtech Foundation Campus. The PDOPDO
team met Professor Janos Urai, Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at GUtech, who himself has participated in several PDOPDO
research projects in recent years."There is a need for well-trained geoscientists, who can explore the resources of the region, and we are looking forward to contributing to the future of the Sultanate," said Urai during his presentation on study programmes at GUtech. Admission is now open for GUtech's Bachelor of Science programme in Applied Geosciences. Applicants for the PDOPDO
scholarships need to enrol through the Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC) first and then sit for an examination at GUtech. "We will have the exams during the coming months, in mathematics, physics and logic," said Dr Barbara Stuble, Academic Director at GUtech. GUtech was founded in 2006 in Muscat. In 2007, GUtech started its Foundation Year and Intensive English Programmes. Students can now choose between four Bachelor of Science programmes: regional management and tourism, urban planning and architectural design, applied information technology and applied geosciences.
