IKC to Produce 'People's Car'

Middle East's largest automaker, Iran Khodro CompanyIran Khodro CompanyLoading... will join the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC)Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC)Loading... to manufacture a 'people's car'.

The vehicle will be available on the market by the end of the year and will be priced between $6,000 and $8,000, said Iran Khodro Company (IKCO)Iran Khodro Company (IKCO)Loading... Managing Director Manouchehr Manteqi.

"The project is different from our Chery 21-sedan production initiative," Manteqi said in response to a question by ISNA about speculation that the car will be jointly manufactured with the Chinese car manufacturer Chery.

In 2007, IKCOIKCOLoading... announced that Chery is set to invest over $370 million in the Iranian city of Babol. Iran KhodroIran KhodroLoading... plans to build Chery 21 sedans by assembling kits from China.

Manteqi announced over the weekend that his company was going to manufacture three models in cooperation with the OICOICLoading....

The first will be what is termed by the Iran KhodroIran KhodroLoading... chief as 'the people's car'. The second would be a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and the third a sport-utility vehicle, or SUV. One million units of the people's car are expected to be produced each year beginning 2009, while an estimated 500,000 MPVs would hit the market beginning in 2010.
