DUBAI -- Dubai World Central (DWC)Dubai World Central (DWC)Loading..., the world's largest airport being built at Jebel Ali and capable of 200 air movements an hour, won't be able to operate at capacity unless a regional air traffic agreement was inked to improve air congestion, Dubai AirportsDubai AirportsLoading...' CEO warned yesterday.

Speaking at the General Aviation in the Middle East (GAME) Summit in Dubai yesterday, Dubai AirportsDubai AirportsLoading... CEO Paul Griffiths said air traffic posed the biggest challenge for the region's aviation and called for coordination of air traffic within the region and the signing of an international accord.

DWS will be capable of 200 aircraft movements an hour, moving 150 million passengers a year, and will be the equivalent size of 19,200 football pitches when it is completed.

Dubai AirportsDubai AirportsLoading... hopes the facility will be licensed early next year, with cargo and general aviation services commencing initially, before the first commercial passengers take off in mid-2009.

However, Griffiths said the facility risked losing the potential of this capacity if it could not be equalled in the air.

"We need to move at a rate to free up the capacity before the traffic grows," he said.

"The airspace can work well if it is highly coordinated, especially with the handover (of air control) between countries."

Dubai AirportsDubai AirportsLoading... has commissioned a study by UK air traffic control experts National Air Traffic Service (NATS) to ensure the best design and management of its Dubai facilities, primarily Dubai World CentralDubai World CentralLoading....

While a date has not been set for the release of the study's findings, research increasingly points to the need for regional cooperation with air traffic control.
