UAE: Business usual for supermarkets selling Danish products

DUBAI/ABU DHABI -- Supermarkets and retail outlets in Dubai and other emirates selling Danish products have reported their business is normal, despite emails and SMSs circulating in the country urging Muslims to boycott Danish products in the wake of the blasphemous cartoons controversy resurfacing.
The recent republication of the 2005 offensive cartoons of Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) by several Danish newspapers has sparked a series of protests and anger among Muslims around the world.
"The controversial issue, at the moment, has not affected sale of Danish products in the UAE," said a senior executive of the Purchase Section of a popular supermarket chain.
Speaking on telephone from Denmark, the Communications Director of a major food exporting company said, "So far, we have not witnessed any dip in the sale of our products in the market," she pointed out.
Meanwhile, the Danish Consul-General in Dubai, Thomas Bay, too told Khaleej Times, "There are no such cases in the UAE presently."By Joy Sengupta and Adel Arafah (Our staff reporters)
