DUBAI -- There has been an increase of around 29 per cent in the peak power consumption this month as compared to January, 2007, the top official of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) said yesterday.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa, said the peak power consumption reached around 2,238 megawatt in January this year whereas it was 1,741 megawatt in the same month last year.
"The peak power consumption increased by nearly 25 per cent between the summer of 2006 and 2007. It was around 4,736 megawatt during summer of 2007 whereas it was around 4,100 megawatt in summer 2006," Al Tayer said.
Al Tayer attributed the increase to many factors, mainly population growth.
"Dubai has been witnessing a rapid growth with more and more investors, tourists and booming industry of hotels. More communities are being built and consequently the demand has been growing for power and water supplies," Al Tayer pointed out.
There was a marginal increase in the water consumption in the month of January in 2007 and this year. "The water consumption was 184 million gallons in January, 2007, whereas it reached 187 million gallons this year.
"The figures are almost the same due to the low temperature we witnessed recently. The recent cold snap cut the consumption of water," Al Tayer said.
He said Dewa had devised a clear strategy to meet the growing demand on power and water services with major and big projects approved in the budget for 2008.
