Baluchestan Tapping Wind Power
- Text size
An official of the Khorasan Razavi Governorate General has announced that the first privately funded wind power plant will be launched in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan province during Government Week in late August.
Karim Abbaspour, who is in charge of following up the progress of projects, said that the 10-megawatt wind power plant will be built by Faragaman Company of Khorasan Razavi province at a cost of 210 billion rials, Fars news agency reported.
He pointed out that once the power plant is inaugurated, about 60-70 rural households will be provided electricity.
The official explained that the construction of the power plant could serve as a model for the private sector to invest in new energy sources.
Private entrepreneurs have realized that these God-given potentials can be tapped for creating jobs, earning revenues and overcoming problems, he said, adding that the government supports the private sector in this field.
Abbaspour underlined that given the heavy industries in the province and the prospects of exporting electricity to neighboring countries, those who are keen on investing in the sector should not worry about the market.
The power plant will be set up as the first phase of the activities of the company. The company is to generate another 1,000 megawatts of power in subsequent phases.
Earlier, managing director of Iran New Energies Organization cited the Fourth Five-Year Development Plan (2005-2010) targets based on which the share of renewable energy in production of electricity has to reach 500 megawatts by 2010 from the current level of 120 megawatts.
At present, 120 megawatts of electricity are totally generated by state-owned power plants, Yousef Armoudeli added.
The official underlined that as per the development plan, the government has to supply electricity (produced from renewable energies) from the private sector.
The organization, Armoudeli said, will issue permits for private investors keen on setting up wind turbines after the approval of their applications. It will also sign contracts with them to guarantee purchase of electricity from private-owned power plants.
