A Dh15 billion marina project with a 2,500-metre long beach will be built on a million-square-metre site at Sharjah's Al Khan Peninsula.

The significance of the scheme in terms of attracting investment and boosting tourism was emphasised Tuesday by Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. Adel Al Zarouni, Managing Director of developer Burooj PropertiesBurooj PropertiesLoading..., said: "Sharjah Marina will stand out as one of the most iconic and significant developments in the UAE.

"This huge project will confirm Sharjah's position as a residential, leisure and business hub, with special emphasis on Islamic values and Arab heritage."

The project would combine tourism, shopping, entertainment, residential, business and cultural facilities in an Arab city environment, all linked by a 2,000-metre by 60-metre canal, he added. "The project will feature four architectural themes - Damascus, Turkey, Andalucia and the Gulf - and will be specifically designed for people who demand modern facilities without compromising traditional Islamic values."

It comprises a residential, commercial and entertainment cluster with four hotels and will feature one of the largest malls in the emirate.

"Choosing Sharjah to host this special development stems from our confidence in the competitive traits of this city. The marina will provide a complete set of lifestyle options and we are committing ourselves to the provision of high quality finishes and luxurious amenities," said Adel."

Project CEO Easa Altenaijy said the development would feature a waterfront amphitheatre that would be used to showcase a wide variety of cultural events.

"It will also include an architecturally magnificent mosque surrounded by a landscaped park, reflecting the commitment to Islamic principles," he added. "There will be a marina beach club, spas and a fitness centre.

"The canal will be surrounded by low-rise buildings. And there will be museums, a family-oriented park and a wide range of food courts," said Easa. A study on laying of roads was under way to streamline traffic movement in the marina.

Engineer Salah bin Butty, the emirate's General Manager of Planning and Survey, said: "Sharjah is witnessing a remarkable construction boom attracting huge investment to the emirate at individual and corporate levels."

He said the emirate was attracting several big investors.
