Green move lifts Qatar Airways' stature |

Doha - Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
reaffirmed its stature as industry leader and innovator with the signing of an agreement to explore the prospects of using synthetic fuel to power aviation turbine engines. Use of the new technology would provide an environmentally-friendly alternative to current aviation fuels, helping to significantly reduce carbon emissions and reduce the impact on climate change.
The airline signed a joint agreement with Qatar PetroleumQatar Petroleum
, ShellShell
, AirbusAirbus
, Rolls-RoyceRolls-Royce
, WoqodWoqod
, and Qatar Science and Technology ParkQatar Science and Technology Park
to study the use of synthetic fuel. The 'Working Together Agreement' means the airline would see Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
become the first commercial airline in the world to operate flights using GTL kerosene fuel.
After signing the agreement on the sidelines of the Dubai air show Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akbar Al Baker said: "Reducing the airline's carbon footprint by running our aircraft solely on GTL fuel will set a new standard in international aviation, making Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
the greenest airline in the world. We are extremely proud to be at the forefront of this movement."
Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
can look back in satisfaction as its participation at the 2007 Dubai Air Show comes to an end today. Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani was in Dubai as an honoured guest for the five-day event.
A major aircraft order was signed with BoeingBoeing
as well as deals with leading fuel and aviation companies to develop environmentally-friendly aviation fuel using gas-to-liquids (GTL).
During the show, Akbar Al Baker inked a number of deals including firm aircraft orders from BoeingBoeing
worth an estimated $13.5bn at list prices, for 30 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft and 27 Boeing 777s . A further 35 BoeingBoeing
aircraft are on option. Sheikh Hamad presided over the signing.
"The Dubai Air Show has proved a phenomenal success yet again. We have been delighted by the huge level of response from visitors to our chalet and our exhibition stand. Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
looks forward to participating at the next air show in two years' time at Dubai's new airport, " Al Baker said.
The airline showcased its award-winning hospitality with a luxurious chalet draped in its burgundy corporate colours. The airline's lie-flat First Class seat cum bed and two Business Class seats were on display at the Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
exhibition stand.
