Kish Hotel to Use Solar Energy

Iran Daily

31 October 2007
Construction work at the first hotel using solar energy to meet its electricity demands began in Kish Island, southern Hormuzgan province on Monday.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony of the seven-star hotel in Kish, managing director of Kish Free Trade Zone OrganizationKish Free Trade Zone OrganizationLoading... expressed his full support to private investors involved in different sectors of the economy, particularly the tourism industry.

In a fax to Iran Daily, the organization's Public Relations Department quoted Majid Shayesteh as saying that about 80 percent of the economic activities in Kish Island are conducted by the private sector. He described the island as a role model for implementing Article 44 of the Constitution (which seeks large-scale privatization).

Also, managing director of Sabet International Firm underlined that construction of the solar-powered hotel would be a great honor for the country.

Hossein Sabet said that although the installations for converting solar energy to electricity for the hotel would be expensive, he will seek to bring in the technology to the country, IRNA reported.

The 500-bedroom hotel is being constructed in 23 stories in an area of 100,000 square meters within Dolphin Park in Kish Island.

Some 1.2-1.3 trillion rials have been anticipated for constructing the hotel.

Officials from Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization, a number of lawmakers from Majlis Tourism Fraction and representatives from executive bodies of the island attended the ceremony. Boasting sun-baked beaches and spectacular sunset, Kish Island is extended over an area of 91 square kilometers.

Sabet, the investor of the groundbreaking project, owns several hotels and tourism attractions in the Canary Island.

The European-Iranian hotel tycoon also has built and developed Kish's luxury hotel Dariush in 2003. Dariush, a $125 million five star hotel with over 200 guest rooms is located near the eastern sandy beaches of the island. The hotel was built to be a reminder of Persepolis, a symbol of the glory and splendor of the ancient Iranian civilization.
