New Caspian Shipping Line Operational

Iran Daily

08 October 2007
Regular shipping line has been launched in the Caspian Sea to transport export items between Iran and Central Asian states, said deputy commerce minister on Sunday.

Mehdi Ghazanfari stated that according to a contract signed between Khazar Shipping Line and Trade Development Organization, two ships would transport commodities on the route once every two weeks, wrote IRNA.

Ships would move between Iran's Anzali Port, Gilan province and Amirabad, Mazandaran province as well as ports in Kazakhstan and Russia (Astrakhan), he added.

The official explained that the route would also help Iran access Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan markets.

He called on exporters interested in shipping commodities to CIS countries to use the line. Transit charges are fixed on the basis of rates for the last Iranian year to March 2007.

Ghazanfari noted that Iranian goods can be sent to remote Russian regions by rail from Astrakhan port. He noted that many Iranian products such as tiles, ceramics, leather and shoes can compete in the Russian market.

Ports and Shipping Organization has plans to increase transit of goods in Caspian Sea. In this line the organization has offered incentives to ships transiting goods in the world's largest inland body of water.

The ships which transited oil commodities in the Caspian Sea under Iranian flags are entitled to 50 percent discount.

Iran's commercial fleet with 182 ships ranks 19th in the world and ninth in Asia. They have the capacity to transit 9.8 million tons of goods.
