A committee is probing the incidents of fire in Peugeot engines, caretaker of Ministry of Industries and MinesMinistry of Industries and MinesLoading... Ali Akbar Mehrabian said.

He hoped that the investigation would be completed within two months, MNA reported Tuesday. Asked whether Iran has asked for compensation from French auto manufacturer Peugeot, Mehrabian said, "We have set up the committee to follow up the issue thoroughly and report to us . . ."

In a related development, vice chairman of Majlis Industries Commission said that parliamentarians have stepped up efforts to ask compensation from the French company.

"We will initiate legal proceedings through international tribunals," Hamid Reza Katouzian told IRNA Tuesday.

The deputy said that the legal action would be followed up by families of those who lost their lives in fire incidents. Some 150 people were killed when cars caught fire.

"If these vehicles had caught fire in the United States, they would have taken $10 million for each individual from French Peugeot."

Katouzian added that Iran has been unable to take compensation due to laxity of officials of Iran KhodroIran KhodroLoading... and Industry Ministry as well as 'special conception of France toward Middle East people'.

Peugeot 405 is manufactured under license from the French company and 'Peugeot (French company) gains privileges from us for this', he explained.

Traffic police chief Brigadier General Mohammad Royanian said on Dec. 31, 2006 that 300 people were either killed or injured when 125 cars caught fire since the beginning of the last Iranian year to March 2007.

Iran KhodroIran KhodroLoading... declared that problem in fuel system of the cars caused the fire incidents.
