UAE: Vaccination certificate a must for travellers

Emirates Today

25 June 2007
Travellers were yesterday warned they could be refused entry to some countries if they did not have the correct vaccination certificates.

People going abroad were urged to obtain the necessary jabs by the Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services.

Parents were told to ensure children received the vaccinations required under the National Immunisation Programme.

Several African and South American countries turned back passengers who had not had the yellow fever vaccination, said Dr Ali Al Marzouki, head of Public Health at the Primary Health Care Department.

He said Thailand required that passengers from the UAE be inoculated against flu, hepatitis A and typhoid. Passengers travelling to Singapore and Malaysia should have had a flu jab, while those going to India and Pakistan must be vaccinated against typhoid, cholera, hepatitis A and malaria.

A flu jab was generally required by European countries. Inoculation against yellow fever, hepatitis A, diphtheria and tetanus was needed for South America, and visitors to Africa needed jabs for hepatitis A, tetanus, typhoid, yellow fever and meningitis.

He said vaccinations were not required for visits to any Arab country apart from Saudi Arabia, which demanded inoculation against meningitis. He said the aims of trav el vaccination programmes varied in different parts of the world.

In the developing world, the emphasis was on preventing epidemics. But countries in the developed world were more concerned with safeguarding the health of the individuals and vaccinations were given even if there was not a threat of a widespread outbreak of a disease.

Having jabs and obtaining health information were important parts of the preparations taken by all travellers in developed countries, added Al Marzouki.

Living standards in Dubai have moved in line with leading global standards so health issues have to be reviewed with a view to consolidating the emirate's international status.
