Tawam Hospital to participate in 'Tour of Hope' for Thalassemia patients

Press Release

26 April 2007
14-day event attracts support of leading medical providers

Tawam Hospital, the UAE and Gulf region's premier healthcare provider in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, has announced its participation in the first ever 'Tour of Hope' event being organised to raise awareness for Thalassemia patients.

Under the patronage of H.R.H. Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the 'Tour of Hope' commences on April 14 and travels through the seven emirates to finish in Dubai on April 28 for a workshop and fun run.  Organised with the motto 'join us for a brighter future for Thalassemia children', the event is open to the public and is designed to highlight the importance of regular medical checkups and blood donation.

The Tour will pass through the Tawam Hospital on Thursday, April 26, 2007, where the participants will be welcomed and invited to participate in activities with hospital staff.

"I would like to warmly welcome all of the Tour participants to Tawam Hospital and I hope that the community will get behind this valuable initiative and show their support for children with this complication. This is a great way for the community to reach out to Thalassemia children and find out valuable information on how to prevent and treat the disorder," said Mr Michael Heindel, CEO of Tawam Hospital.

Thalassemia is a genetic disorder that reduces the haemoglobin content in the body and can cause acute anaemia, which if not treated, could be fatal.  Patients suffering from the blood disorder may have to have regular blood transfusions or bone marrow transplants.

In addition to Tawam Hospital, a consortium of medical providers have confirmed their participation in the 'Tour of Hope', including the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi, the Khalifa Medical City, Al Jimi Hospital, the Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services, Saker Hospital, Al Kasemy Hospital, Al Kuwait Hospital, Khalifa Hospital, Ras Al Khaima Hospital, Umm El Qewan Hospital, Al Fujairah Hospital and others.

Tawam Hospital is the Middle East's premier medical facility and is preferred for the specialist treatment it offers, particularly in oncology, family medicine, fertility services and intensive care.
