Infrastructure development at Reem Island gathers momentum; AED 520 million grid station project awarded to ABB

Fully dedicated grid station to provide 1,500 MVA to island
Abu Dhabi, April 4th 2007: To meet the requirements of the developers of Reem Island, Reem Developers, SorouhSorouhLoading... and TamouhTamouhLoading..., Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA)Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA)Loading..., has awarded ABB an AED520million grid station project with a capacity of 1,500 MVA. Fully dedicated to Al Reem Island, the 400KV grid station project was approved by the Executive Council and will be connected to the Abu Dhabi grid via underground 400KV cables. Integrated with Abu Dhabi and Saadiyat Island, the station will provide 1,500MVA to the Island aimed at providing a reliable supply of electricity.

Dr. Falah Mustafa, CEO of Bayt Al Khidma, on behalf of all three developers said, "ABB is a reputable company with a proven track record in this field. The company has a long history of providing high voltage power supply to customers worldwide. The first phase of the project has commenced. It will be delivered within 18 months and the entire project is due for completion in three years."

Al Reem Island will shortly receive its temporary power supply which is required for construction. Abu Dhabi Distribution CompanyAbu Dhabi Distribution CompanyLoading... (ADDC) has supplied 16 cable feeders with a total cable length of 48,000m from the E19 Grid Station in Abu Dhabi. The cost of this temporary network exceeds AED 20 million and it has a full capacity of 80 MVA. The work is almost complete and the network is expected to be energized within a couple of weeks. Bayt Al Khidma has prepared the first phase of the temporary network on Al Reem with a total cable length of 28,000m and with 20 substations. The cost of the first phase network is about AED 17 million.

"Our government is committed to promoting the development of the country and we are very pleased and grateful to all the government bodies that have been incredibly cooperative," added Mustafa. "Their support will ensure a smooth and timely development of Al Reem Island. The finalization of the grid station by August 2008 is one sign of the fast-paced progress that Al Reem Island project is undergoing."
