UAE sets record in poverty campaign
- Text size
The people of the UAE became world record breakers yesterday when the official figures for the Stand Up Against Poverty campaign were released.
A staggering 23,542,614 people stood up all over the world as part of the global awareness campaign to eradicate poverty.
A total of 20,003 people, came together across the UAE as more than 21 simultaneous "Stand Up" events took place in the country.
The benchmark set by worldwide officials from the Guinness Team was set at 10,000 globally, however, the UAE alone went on to beat all expectations by doubling that figure.
Anish Kattukaran, national co-ordinator of Make Poverty History-Emirates, said the figures were astounding.
"It is incredible how awareness about the campaign in the country has grown in less than 10 months to the sort of figures we have received today," he said.
"This incredible gesture was made even more meaningful due to the fact that it fell in the holy month of Ramadan and so clearly brought out the countries willingness to support the less fortunate." The efforts in the UAE were complimented by the hundreds of thousands of people, who participated in the challenge across the Arab World Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Palestinian Territories, Bahrain, Oman and Egypt.
The Stand Up locations were diverse and included iftars, prayer groups, schools, universities, city squares, parks, beaches and offices.
The challenge in the UAE was co-ordinated by Make Poverty History-Emirates. It was an initiative of The Global Call to Action Against Poverty and The UN-Millennium Campaign.
The UAE campaign has seen a huge support in less than 12 months, from the recent "Walk Against Poverty".
The new world record was announced by 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammed Yunus along with Guinness officials.
