Kuwait media freedom extolled

KUNA (Kuwait News Agency)

CAIRO, Nov 28 (KUNA) -- Kuwait enjoys democracy in diverse domains, particularly media freedom, a senior Kuwaiti journalist said here Friday.

Kuwait is now in the forefront of Arab and foreign countries in view of media freedom, said Abdulhamid Al-Daas, a member of the Kuwait Journalists Association, in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

The official was speaking on the sidelines of 11th Conference of the Union of Arab Journalists, which wrapped up here last night.

For the second year in succession, Kuwait has preceded several great Arab countries like Egypt and Lebanon in terms of press freedom thanks to its major media boom following amendments to the publication act, he said.

The number of Kuwait's Arabic daily newspapers has risen from just five to 15, in addition to several other newspapers issued in foreign languages as a natural result of the free press atmosphere in Kuwait, said Al-Daas, who is editor-in-chief of Kuwait's Alam Al-Yawm daily.

Expounding on the role of the Kuwait Journalists Association, he said the association had played a key role in the revision of the publication law.

The association's 1,500 members hold leading media posts as managing editors and section heads, he said.

He finally stressed the significance of responsible and credible press freedom by means of safeguarding the country's supreme interests, protecting social fabric and cementing national unity.
