Records will be deleted from October if registration has not been renewed for two years

Dubai The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)Loading... will erase a vehicle’s records from its system if its registration had expired two years ago or more, a senior official said yesterday.

This means that owners will not be able to insure such vehicles, as they will be ‘officially non-existent’, Ahmad Behroozian, Chief Executive Officer of the Licensing Agency at the RTARTALoading..., told Gulf News yesterday.

The measure will be implemented by the end of October.

The decision has been taken to maintain the safety of road users in Dubai, as unregistered vehicles constitute a serious hazard, according to a RTARTALoading... statement.

Behroozian explained that wiping out the vehicle records from the RTA’s system means that if the vehicle is found operating on the roads, the driver will face serious legal consequences.

“The law allows us to write-off a vehicle’s records after one year if the registration is not renewed. However, we are being lenient and asking drivers whose vehicle registrations expired two or more years ago, and giving them until the end of October to renew the registration before we start writing them off,” he said.

Gulf News had earlier reported that the number of vehicles with an expired registration increased by at least 20 per cent this year.

There are now more than 100,000 vehicles with an expired registration in Dubai compared with 80,000 last year.

There are 1.1 million registered vehicles in Dubai.
