Economic council welcomes labour ministry's vision

Dubai: The Dubai Economic Council (DEC) has welcomed the initiative taken by the Ministry of LabourMinistry of LabourLoading... to develop the country's labour market in relation to the development needs of the country.

The DEC's meeting, chaired by Juma Al Majid, Chairman of DEC, was attended by Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airlines and group, Abdul Aziz Al Gurair, Speaker of the Federal National Council, Saqr Gobash Saeed Gobash, Minister of Labour, and Khalid Bin Sulayem, Director General of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM)Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM)Loading....

In his opening speech, Al Majid pointed out the importance of cooperation between the different economic activities in public and private sectors to serve the national economy.

He also emphasised that the attendance of the Ministry of LabourMinistry of LabourLoading... at the meeting was considered to be part of the coordination between the Ministry and local business sector.

Hani Al Hameli, Secretary General of the DEC, stated that inviting the Ministry of LabourMinistry of LabourLoading... and the Department of Tourism and Commercial MarketingDepartment of Tourism and Commercial MarketingLoading... to meet with the DEC reflects the Council's mandates.

The Minister of Labour emphasised the important role played by the Ministry in coping with the economic development of the UAE.

He said the long-term strategy of the Ministry is to bring to fruition the economic vision of the UAE.

"The Emiratisation issue is linked to the pattern of the UAE economic development, besides other factors ...," he added.

Bin Sulayem presented the department's plans to deal with the impact of the global financial crisis.

He stated that the crisis has hit global tourism but its impact on Dubai's tourism was less than was the case in many other countries.

"One ... [example] ... is the number of visitors to Dubai which increased from 6.9 million in 2007 to 7.5 million in 2008," he said.

Bin Sulayem also revealed the DTCMDTCMLoading...'s policies to deal with the impact of the global financial crisis.

He pointed out that the department has participated in 23 international fairs in entertainment and business tourism, in addition to 130 activities organised abroad.

Additionally, the department organised nine workshops in Saudi Arabia, India, the Baltic States, Japan and the GCC.

Bin Sulayem stressed that the department had drawn up both short-term and long-term strategies to improve the tourism sector viability under the present global downturn.
