BEIRUT: Telecommunication Minister Jebran Bassil signed Wednesday contracts with five firms that want to set up international call centers in Lebanon. The firms which intend to set up call centers are Call Me, ICC, Tele Performance, Professional Call Center and Media Tech. Bassil said the ministryministry
has so far signed 10 call-center contracts and expects to sign 10 more in the near future.
"We notice that the companies applying to operate in Lebanon are asking if they can provide other services that can draw more customers to the county," Bassil told reporters after the signing ceremony.
He added that the ministryministry
would study these requests before giving a final answer.
The five companies will set up offices in Beirut, Tripoli, Nabatieh and other regions in an attempt to reach the biggest number of clients.
Bassil said he encourages the companies to set up offices outside Beirut to stimulate the economies in other regions.
"If these companies set up operations outside the capital then the citizens in these areas don't have to come to Beirut to find work," the minister said.
Last month, the giant Japanese company Toshiba set up a call center in Beirut.
Bassil encouraged the companies to hire handicapped people as the law stipulates that 3 percent of the workforce should be physically disabled.
Responding to a question, Bassil said the ministryministry
would continue to crack down on illegal international call centers in Lebanon. - The Daily Star
