BEIRUT: Speaker Nabih Berri said Wednesday the Lebanese government has decided to deliver aid to the families of the Ethiopian plane crash victims.

“This kind of support has nothing to do with compensation, but it is a form of help submitted to the families of all victims including our Ethiopian partners and brothers who were aboard the plane,” the speaker added.

Berri was addressing the families of the Ethiopian plane crash victims who visited him at his residence in Ain al-Tineh

The meeting was attended by Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Minister Ali al-Shami, Public Works and Transportation Minister Ghazi al-Aridi, Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar, Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) commander Jean Kahwaji as well as an array of judicial and political figures.

Berri said he has agreed with Lebanese President Michel Sleiman and Prime Minister Saad Hariri to deliver aid to the victims’ families, adding that an official decision would be issued soon regarding the subject.

The speaker questioned the absence of a National Committee for Civil Aviation and a Crisis Management Committee.

“When such a catastrophe happens, the responsibility doesn’t fall only on a minister or on the LAF commander, but such a committee should handle the issue as well. I visited President Michel Sleiman two days after the tragedy and highlighted the importance of forming a Crisis Management Committee,” Berri said.

The speaker also noted that starting June Middle East Airlines will schedule flights to Belgium from where flights would head toward several African countries.

“Middle East Airlines will also schedule flights from Beirut to Africa,” Berri said, adding that he was quite certain that Middle East Airlines, Lebanon’s national carrier, would take this decision very soon. “In principle, we have agreed on this step,” he said.

Berri highlighted the importance of preparing a legal file regarding the rights of the victims’ families and filing a lawsuit in the manufacturing company’s country should this step turn out to be legally possible.

The speaker said that he agreed with the justice minister on a certain formula to resolve inheritance issues.

“I urge the families of the victims to form a small committee composed of three or four lawyers to handle this case. Those lawyers should always contact the justice minister and the legal committee that takes care of this issue in the Justice Ministry,” Berri said.
