BEIRUT: Lebanese authorities intend to intensify their crackdown on all those who fail to secure mandatory car insurance and will penalize household owners who do not provide medical insurance for their domestic helps. This decision was adopted on Wednesday during a meeting between the ministers of interior, health, finance and labor.
"Imposing mandatory insurance on people who pay for the mechanic of their cars is easy because the new law requires that vehicles owners pay for mandatory insurance before being allowed to complete their mechanics," Interior Minister Ziyad Baroud said after the meeting.
Baroud added that road checkpoints are excessively available to impound cars with unpaid mechanics.
This new law is part of the recommendations that have been included in the report of the commission that was created after the first meeting between the Labor, Health and Economy and Trade ministries which took place on September 23, 2008.
Close to 90 percent of the recommendations related to organizing mandatory insurance for vehicles and insurance for foreign laborers in Lebanon have been implemented, said Health Minister Jawad Khalife.
Mohammad Safadi, Economy and Trade Minister, said the decisions taken include the improvement of IT systems in the concerned ministries where more information about insurance policies can be included. He said the transfer of information between ministries is going to be more effective by organizing operations between them.
Concerning medical insurance for foreign laborers, Safadi said that the new decisions impose on the employer a commitment to keep the insurance policies of his employees going as long as they are still working in Lebanon.
He added that these measures aim to reduce the strain on the treasury from providing medical coverage for the injured parties. - The Daily Star
