BEIRUT: US Presidential candidate Ralph Nader said in comments published Tuesday both the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama, "will usher harmful and dangerous policies on Lebanon similar to those made under current US President George W. Bush, regardless of who wins." "The Bush administration, with the full support of both Democrats and Republicans armed Israel," Nader told As-Safir newspaper in an interview. "These arms were later used to commit massacres in Qana and [the rest of] South Lebanon during the summer 2006 war. Both Senators McCain and Obama voted in favor of a bill supporting Israel at the time," he added. "The Lebanese government did not linger long in receiving US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice [in Lebanon], despite her shameful role in promoting the war and her disgusting and insensitive statements when she said the conflict [represented] the birth of a new Middle East." Nader said. He told As-Safir that the West was causing Lebanon "to break up by supporting the Lebanese criminals and warlords." "In Lebanon for example, Western influence has for a long time been the source of civil conflict disguised as ethnic and religious disputes," Nader said. Nader, who is of Lebanese descent, has run for president five times since 1992. - The Daily Star
