BEIRUT: Speaker Nabih Berri said during meetings with MPs in Parliament on Wednesday that the US request for information on mobile network communications should have been submitted through the Lebanese Foreign Ministry.

He also stressed the need to improve governmental performance, hoping that Cabinet’s adoption of some administrative appointments in Wednesday’s session would be the starting point for accomplishing “this vital and crucial issue.”

According to the lawmakers Berri raised questions about the link between the training offered by the US to the Lebanese Internal Security Forces and the request for information on mobile network communications. The speaker insisted on submitting any related cooperation agreement, “if it existed,” to the communications parliamentary committee to examine it during its next session, according to the MPs.

Commenting on National Dialogue talks expected to kick off next Tuesday, Berri said the makeup of the national dialogue had been decided by President Michel Sleiman, while stressing on the importance of dialogue “which is more than necessary for the country.”

Sleiman announced Sunday an expanded list of participants. Members of both the majority March 14 and the opposition alliances have voiced reservations about the inclusion of new members to the committee, as well as the exclusion of others.

In comments carried by the Central News Agency on Tuesday, the president said that dialogue would focus on the national defense strategy, adding that he did not mind including other items to the agenda provided the dialogue’s participants agreed.

On Tuesday evening, Berri discussed Lebanese-Syrian relations and Israeli threats on Lebanon with Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat.

The two politicians, who met at the Speaker’s residence in the Beirut neighborhood of Ain al-Tineh, also discussed a visit by Berri to Turkey scheduled for March 20.

Following the meeting, Berri said Lebanon could export fresh water to Gulf countries.

“For the last several years I have been urging Lebanon to launch this type of project. If implemented, we would have put a large amount of money in the treasury and relaxed our debt burdens,” Berri said. – The Daily Star, with Naharnet
