BEIRUT: The General Directorate of General Security announced on Thursday that it has taken all measures necessary to stop the advertisement of herbal medicines.

The directorate was responding to a speech made by the head of the parliamentary health committee Atef Majdalani a day earlier, in which Majdalani questioned the security force’s role in implementing advertisement law number 90, which banned all advertisements of herbal medication in all media outlets.

“General Security confirms that it has taken all measures necessary to implement law number 90 concerning the ban of advertising for herbal medicines,” the directorate said in a statement. “However, satellite television channels [are not subject to] the law concerning the prior surveillance of advertisements.”

The statement then clarified that the directorate referred all violations to the Information Ministry.

Majdalani made a speech Wednesday after his meeting with Health Minister Mohammad Jawad Khalifeh and with Information Minister Tarek Mitri. “Can anyone believe that General Security is unable to stop broadcasts of non-licensed advertisements on television?” he demanded.

Majdalani was trying to explain the reason why not all television stations have yet executed the new law and continue to promote herbal medicines.

“If security forces aren’t doing their job then I don’t know what to say,” he added.

The new law was put in place after 10 people reportedly died from substituting their subscribed medications with herbal medicines.

Advertisements for herbal products were blamed and were said to be misleading and at times illegal. – The Daily Star
